Four green measures for tanneries

20/05/2010
The director of the pollution prevention division of China's ministry of environmental protection, Wei Honglian, has said a change in attitude has occurred in the tanning industry there.

At a meeting of a self-regulatory panel that the Chinese leather industry has set up, Mr Wei said the sector had become more positive and less passive about environmental protection. He said this would help the industry's long-term development and allow it to play an even more important role in the global leather sector.

He said the industry is going to face stricter regulations on environmental protection, and added that his division was already preparing to put four distinct measures in place.

The first of these is to publish a list of tanneries that meet environmental standards, to highlight best practice and set an example to others. Secondly, the pollution prevention division will encourage buyers to purchase from the companies on this list. At the same time, Mr Wei's organisation will encourage regular assessments of tanneries in China to gauge environmtal performance and make it clear to companies in the tanning sector that permission for future flotation on the stock market could depend on having clean production.
