One of the tanneries in the Korangi Industrial Area in Karachi, Jaffery Leather Tannery, has lodged an official complaint, alleging that two police officers shot dead one of its workers.

The incident happened on May 17, after four officers hit and chased the man into the tannery building. Two of the policeman are then alleged to have opened fire on the man. His colleagues took him to the nearby Jinnah hospital but medical staff were unable to save him.

Jaffery has asked the Pakistan Tanners Association to help it bring the police officers to justice and to secure compensation for the family of the worker, named as Muhammad Shehbaz.

Local media said a group of 3,000 tannery workers had taken part in a demonstration to express their anger at the death of their collegue.
