New abattoir for Uganda

17/05/2010
The Ugandan government has announced that it will set up a new abattoir in Nakaseke in the centre of the country.

Agriculture minister, Maj Bright Rwamirama, said the measure is part of efforts to promote exports of animal products in overseas markets. He said the government was also setting up 22 new slaughter sheds in rural areas to improve hygiene standards, and would introduce special vehicles for transportating animals for slaughter.

The minister pointed out that poor transportation of animals is affecting the quality of meat and hides.

He also said that Indian corporation Tata International was planning to open a tannery in Uganda.
