Tunisia moves away from uppers to finished footwear

17/05/2010
The leather and footwear industry in Tunisia appears to be making a success of an attempted move away from shoe uppers to complete finished products.

In the first quarter of 2010, the sector achieved export growth of almost 13%, compared to the same period in 2009. All areas of leather and shoe production contributed to this success, with the exception of shoe uppers, for which the figures showed a drop of 4.8%.

Commentators have linked this to a growth of 18.2% in exports of finished footwear. They pointed out that shoes, shoe uppers and handbags account for 88% of all the sector’s exports for the quarter. Overall, these products brought in export revenue of around $130 million. Hides and skins and finished leather brought in around $6 million over the same period.
