Prime minister's wife to leave leathergoods job

14/05/2010
The wife of the new UK prime minister, Samantha Cameron, has announced that she is to step down from her position as creative director of high-end leathergoods brand Smythson because she is expecting a baby in the autumn.

Mrs Cameron will work two days a week as a creative consultant at the company. In a statement announcing the move, she said: "As a creative consultant working two days a week I will be involved in all the same areas as before, however I will not be directly responsible for them. I look forward to my changed role and balancing it with my new day-to-day life as well as being able to spend more time with my children."

She has worked at Smythson for 14 years and in 2009 was named accessories designer of the year by Glamour Magazine.

Her husband, David Cameron, became UK prime minister on May 10.
