13/05/2010

The government of South Korea has confirmed an eleventh case in an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) that has been affecting the livestock sector in the country since April.

The new case occurred on a farm in Chungcheongnam-do Province in the centre of the country. The authorities immediately cordoned the farm off and began a programme of slaughtering the cattle there, as well as any animals within a range of 500 metres.

Government sources said the total number of slaughtered animals so far since the April outbreak is close to 50,000 head.
