Unprecedented demand for Mexican leather

The president of COFOCE, a body that promotes overseas trade for manufacturers of leather, footwear and other products in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, Gerardo Padilla Villalpando, has said local tanneries are experiencing unprecedented demand from overseas clients.

Guanajuato's tanneries are around 500 in number, although many of them are small. Of these, 80 are listed as regular exporters, with clients in 30 countries. Collectively, these 80 tanneries brought in almost $300 million in hide and leather exports in 2009. Mr Padilla said on May 12 that his organisation was preparing to announce the results for the first quarter of this year, but added: "The tanning industry is one of the fastest growing business sectors in Guanajuato. Our tanneries are exporting finished and cut leather at unprecedented levels."

He said the state authorities were still wary of ups and downs in the global economy and, for that reason, had limited themselves to predicting a 5% growth rate for the tanning sector for the quarter.
