US beef performs well in Asia in Q1

The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has spoken of high levels of success in various Asian countries in the first three months of this year.

Its senior vice-president for the Asia Pacific region, Joel Haggard, has said after examining first quarter import data from each of the key Asian markets that there are some positive trends for US beef.

“I don't think people realise how strong the demand is for US beef in Asia,” Mr Haggard said. “In Korea, imports of US beef are up 57% in the first quarter. There has been a big gain in market share there. If we look at Japan, we are up 45% from the pace of last year. Total imports of beef are down slightly in Japan, but the US share is up sharply. We are still restricted to 20 months and younger cattle, but the demand is definitely there. In Hong Kong total beef imports in the first quarter are up 52%, but the US is up 270% there.”
