Weekend woes for Pakistani leather industry

The chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), Gulzar Firoz, has criticised a government proposal to make Saturday a non-working day in the country.

If banks and government offices, including customs offices, close for two days rather than one day each week, it will affect the production and export of leather, the PTA chairman insisted

He said the change would lead to tanners having to cope with non-clearance of their consignments on a more regular basis. Pakistan’s export of leather is already on a continuous decline, Mr Firoz said and, with an extra office holiday each week, he said it would be impossible for the leather industry to meet its export targets.
