Hide export increase continues in April

06/05/2010
The figures for the first four months of 2010 show that the value of the hides (finished, semi-finished and raw) that Brazil has exported this year so far has reached US$552 million, an increase of 79.8% on the same period last year.

For the month of April alone, export revenue from the hides sector was $159 million, an increase of 98.7% on the same month last year. The principal markets to which the raw material was shipped in April 2010 were Italy, China and Hong Kong.

On announcing the latest figures, the president of the Brazilian Tannery Association (CICB), Wolfgang Goerlich, said: “Unlike last year, the Brazilian tanning sector is going through a very positive phase. This points to a recovery in overseas sales of Brazilian hides and makes us think we can close the year on $1.7 billion or $1.8 billion.”
