China: energy consumption must come down

06/05/2010

The China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) has picked up on comments that the country’s premier, Wen Jiabao, made on May 5, saying that the manufacturing sector had to make more effort to cut emissions and conserve energy.

China’s aim was to cut energy consumption as a proportion of its gross domestic product by 20% between 2005 and 2010. Premier Wen said at a State Council meeting on May 5 that the country was short of this target and had seen the proportion rise in the first quarter of this year in the main industrial regions.

“We can never break our pledge, stagger our resolution, or weaken our efforts, no matter how difficult it is,” Wen said. He called for stricter control over “high-energy-consuming and high-polluting sectors”. CLIA’s reporting of the comments suggests it may regard the tanning industry in some parts of China as being one of the sectors in the spotlight here.
