Land could be safer in the hands of livestock farmers

A joint study involving researchers from the University of São Paulo and Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, has highlighted how complicated Brazil's fight against deforestation of its rainforests is.

The study concluded that around 60% of Brazil's land-mass, equating to almost 540 million hectares, is covered by natural vegetation. Livestock farmers and other operators in the rural economy are obliged by Brazilian law to look after areas of rainforest on their land. The country's own forestry code prohibits deforestation in sensitive areas.

However, the new study has concluded that around 100 million hectares fall outside the protection that farmers can provide, leaving them more vulnerable to illegal deforestation.
