Job losses for Iranian leatherworkers
According to reports, 1,500 employees have lost their jobs since several leather factories in Mashhad, Iran, closed in recent years.
According to the Safir News website, 45 leather manufacturing plants have been forced to close since 2003. The closures have been attributed to the instability of the currency and to cheap imports from Asia.
A leather sector representative said that little has been done to prevent the closures or to support the country’s leather industry.
