Luxury goods sales affected by Bangkok demonstrations

27/04/2010

According to reports, fashion and leathergoods manufacturers in Thailand have been negatively impacted by the recent red shirt anti-government demonstrations in Bangkok. Some of the city’s major shopping districts have been closed since the beginning of the month as a result of the unrest.

Thanasut Chiu, export and marketing manager of MBP Leather Industries, told The Nation newspaper the effects had been severe. Luckily for the company, which produces Albedo and Jay Chiu leathergoods, it has 38 shops in Bangkok and the surrounding areas and has been able to send employees to help out at other stores. However, sales have still fallen 30%-40% since the demonstrations began, he said.
