São Paulo leads the way

23/04/2010

Brazil exported leather and hides worth US$393 million in the first quarter of 2010.

Tanneries and hide traders in the state of São Paulo had the biggest share of this total at $114.2 million, which is almost 29% of the overall value and an increase of 107% on the São Paulo industry figure for the same period last year. Rio Grande do Sul was in second place with $ 95 million, a 24% share of the total and growth from last year of 53%. These two were followed by Ceará ($40.8 million, 10.3% share and 82% growth), and Paraná ($33.4 million, 8.4% share and growth of 56%).

Other prominent leather states were Bahia, which exported leather and hides worth $27.3 million, Mato Grosso with $26.7 million, Goiás with $14.5 million, Mato Grosso do Sul with $13 million and Minas Gerais with $10.1 million). Two states had slightly lower export values but stood out in the first-quarter figures, issued recently by the Brazilian Tannery Association (CICB), because of their high levels of growth. Pará had export growth of 256% for leather and hides in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the year before, while the corresponding figure for Rondônia was 313%.
