EU checks Uruguay’s biological waste systems
Representatives from the EU are currently visiting Uruguay to carry out tests on how meat processors deal with biological waste. The last checks of this kind took place in 2004. Uruguay has implemented a national biohazard programme devised by the Miguel C Rubino veterinary laboratory. The programme aims to detect the use of prohibited products such as steroids and hormone growth promoters, residues of banned antibiotics and waste generated drug misuse. According to reports, results of the audit have been positive so far; however, if any positive samples are found it will prove costly. It will include results for cattle, sheep and horse slaughter as the EU is a major export destination for these products.
