Invest in our leather sector, urges Ethiopian minister

Ethiopian minister for economics and business, Mehreterab Mulugeta, is encouraging investors, particularly Indian investors, to take up investment opportunities within the country.

According to Mr Mulugeta, the country is rich in raw materials and offers low labour costs and other incentives.

Tannery and leathergoods were among the industries he recommended Indian firms to invest in as the country offers the largest livestock population in Africa. Other important investment opportunities are available for crops, particularly cotton, as well as minerals and natural gas.

An Ethiopian firm, Ethiopia Tannery Share Company, recently won World Leather’s global Tannery of the Year award (see leatherbiz.com 29.03.10).
