Hide shortage hits Pakistan
According to reports, Pakistan’s leather sector is suffering because there is a shortage of hides and skins. The main reasons given have been higher export levels and the smuggling of Pakistani livestock to places like Iran and Afghanistan.
The Pakistan Tanners’ Association reportedly told news site Dawn that although 25-30% of animals are slaughtered outside the abattoirs by bulk consumers, higher exports and the rampant smuggling of animals have created “havoc”.
Meanwhile, Dawn says the Pakistan leather garments manufacturers & exporter association (PLGMEA) pointed out that it is peak season for the industry but that exporters are currently unable to fulfil export orders.
