New International Council of Tanners president takes office
09/04/2010
The president of the Brazilian Tannery Association (CICB), Wolfgang Goerlich, has been confirmed as the new president of the International Council of Tanners (ICT).
His election was announced at the end of 2009, but Mr Goerlich took up the position formally at a recent meeting of the ICT in Hong Kong, coinciding with the APLF exhibition.
Mr Goerlich, who was born in Germany, but has worked in the tanning industry in Brazil for many years, became president of the Brazilian industry organisation in August.
He is the first representative of the Brazilian industry to hold the position. Commentators in Brazil have said his appointment reflects the South American country’s importance in the industry worldwide now. The tanning sector is a significant driver of the Brazilian economy, employing around 50,000 people and contributing $3.5 billion to the country’s total income in 2008.
Around 800 companies in Brazil are involved in the production of leather.
