Tannery workers hurt in confrontation with police

Workers at a tannery in Luján, Argentina, staged a protest outside the town hall on April 8 after the local authorities ordered the closure of the facility.
The tannery workers said afterwards that at least five members of the group had been injured in confrontations with the police.
The tannery’s closure was ordered by the official sustainable development body of the province of Buenos Aires after a series of complaints from local people about the air quality in the local environment.
Workers at the tannery, which employs around 1,000 people, had gone to Luján town hall to try to defend the facility’s environmental performance and to ask for it to be re-opened.
