Surge in Brazilian leather exports
According to the Brazilian Tannery Association (CICB), the country’s leather exports totalled US$393 million during the first three months of the year, registering an increase of 74% over the same quarter of 2009.
March exports totalled US$159 million, an increase of 101% compared with the same month last year and 22.3% compared with February 2010.
"The results up to March of this year indicate a recovery for Brazilian leather exports, which could end the year near US$1.5 billion," said CICB president, Wolfgang Goerlich.
According Mr Goerlich, this would represent an increase of almost 30% compared with 2009 exports, but still would be below the 2007-08 export level of US$2 billion.
Brazil’s main export markets in March were Italy, China and the US.
