Japanese beef imports down 15%

Japan imported 33,100 tonnes of beef in February, down 15% compared with the same month last year.
However, according to figures from the country’s finance ministry, imports from the US increased significantly, rising 88% from February 2009 to 5,400 tonnes. This was the highest February volume since the resumption of US beef imports to Japan in 2006, but was still only 25% of the volume imported in February 2003 before the BSE outbreak.
