The organisers of the APLF event in Hong Kong, which ran this year from March 29–31, have announced the winners of their Best of APLF awards.

The awards are an initiative aimed at cultivating and nurturing talent and creativity in fashion-related industries. The project recognises qualities such as design excellence, originality, innovation and use of materials among the leathers and finished products on show at the different components of the APLF event.

One of the awards was for innovation in leather, which went to French tannery Tannerie R Carriat for a new bonding method it has come up with as an alternative to glue.

Another tannery, Tata International from India (also a finalist in the Tannery of the Year Awards) took the best ecological product award for the work it has done to reduce the chemical processes involved in preparing leather for shoe manufacture.

The winner of the best bag award was Hong Kong leathergoods brand C&R International for a deerskin convertible bag that it had on display. In women’s footwear, the winner was Stephanie Classif from Brazil for a new modern retro collection it brought to Hong Kong. A second bag prize, best quality bag collection, went to Thailand to At Bangkok.

In the small leathergoods category, the winner was Elaine Khoo from Indonesia for a new line of small purses, while the winner in the travelware category was Serenade Leather from Australia.

Another Hong Kong company, Granda Industries, took the prize in the best lifestyle product category for a collection of accessories that included iPod cases.

The award for the best fashion leather went to Turkish tanner Marmara Deri for a double-face leather collection in a variety of colours and textures. In a parallel category, French company Aribato won the best fashion garment award for an elegant leather jacket it exhibited in the Fashion Access of the fair.
