Turkish tanners keen to re-start hide imports
29/03/2010
Industry observers from Turkey have said that the demand for raw material from sheep, cattle and goats dropped by about 50% worldwide during the global economic downturn.
However, as in other countries, traders in Turkey have begun to observe an upturn in raw material prices over the last four months.
Turkish domestic wet-salted cattle hide prices have almost doubled since their lowest point during the downturn and are now at between $2 and $2.50 per kilo. Observers have called the increase "inexplicable" because demand from user organisations, such as footwear manufacturers, is still low.
Tanners in Turkey are hopeful of being able to start importing wet-salted hides again, a practice that all but stopped in the course of 2008 and 2009, and also wet blue, with South America and the Middle East the most likely sources.
