A California-based research company, GIA, has compiled a new report on the global leather production industry.

The study predicts that the amount of leather tanners produce worldwide in 2012 will exceed 18 billion square-feet.

It says that, as the global economy picks up, demand for leather is likely to increase, with the material gaining back its "affordable indulgence" status.

The report says the prime factors driving the demand for leather are the higher disposable income of women, fashion consciousness, influx of innovative designs, more affordable prices, and exposure through retailers. "The increase in the proportion of women in the corporate world is translating to higher demand for leather products such as document and office cases, briefcases, wallets, chequebook holders, and business cards holders. The demand for computer, mobile phone, and other accessory cases has also increased in recent years," GIA says.

And while the report acknowledges that Asia, in particular China, is the biggest leather-producing region in the world now, it says the tanning industry In Europe alone is likely to be worth $29.5 billion by 2015.

The report is called Leather Tanning: A Global Market Report. It will be published in April at a price of $3950.
