Argentina's most southerly feedlot opens

Livestock farmers and tanners in the south of Argentina hope to receive a boost from a new feedlot that has opened for business 40 kilometres from the town of Pico Truncado.
The new facility, on a ranch called La Frida, is the southernmost feedlot in the country.
Fernando Arjona, one of the investors in the project, has told local media that he believes the idea will work well because of the improvements it will bring to livestock. He said: "There are a lot of animals in mountain areas around here, but in winter they have to walk long distance because of the cold and because of the lack of pasture land. The cattle end up being thin and producing tougher meat. If farmers bring the cattle to Truncado instead, we can fatten them up to the right levels and offer a better quality product."
He said making better use of hides after slaughter would be one of the aims of the project and would help generate work for local people.
The feedlot will have capacity for around 600 head of cattle to begin with, but should be able to accommodate double that number next year.
