Turkish clothing manufacturers, including those specialising in leather, are placing greater importance on design these days, a report in the Financial Times has said.
Istanbul is the European Capital of Culture this year and, according many in the world of fashion, this is having an impact on design.
The creative director of fashion brand Tween, Günes Güner Isik, said: “All the creative arts are coming together in Istanbul right now.”
As a consequence, the chief executive of leathergoods brand Desa, Burak Celet, said Turkey was now “moving beyond” manufacturing, meaning that companies such as his now feel they are in a position to add more value than before and become more than mere outsource manufacturing partners for fashion brands in western Europe and North America.
Desa has 70 stores across Turkey and opened its first store outside the country, in London, last year. It aims to open three further stores in London before the end of 2010.
