Tannery waste works in farm experiment

An centre for agricultural research in the Brazilian state of São Paulo has carried out tests on using tannery waste as fertiliser.
The Luiz de Queiroz school of agricultural research in the city of Piracicaba tried out two different kinds of sludge from tanneries—sludge from primary settling and sludge from activated effluent treatment plants—on test projects to improve soil conditions and to fertilise crops.
Agronomist Alexandre Martin Martines carried out the work and afterwards said he was satisfied both types of sludge worked well, although he added that it was important to control the levels of some materials, such as nitrogen and sodium.
He commented: “We have been able to establish that it is viable to use both types of material, that they can both be of benefit in agriculture, as long as we are careful over a few things.”
