Fewer cows in the US

19/03/2010

The US Department of Agriculture has published a new inventory of cattle in the country.

The study shoes that, at the end of January 2010, the number of beef cows in the US was the lowest since 1963. The combined total across all cattle types was the lowest since the 1950s.

Industry commentators have said that this is less a problem for the meat industry than for the leather supply chain as cattle, reared in feedlots, are fed to heavier weights these days, allowing packers to produce more meat from their cows.
