Paraguay predicts leather demand from China will double

Leather industry sources in Paraguay have predicted a 25% increase in demand from China for raw material from the South American country this year.
Paraguay’s tanning industry association, Cimac, said that China is already the biggest market for its hides but that it expects to send 50,000 hides to China this year, a rise of 25% on 2009. Cimac spokesperson, Carlos Legal, told local media that this level of demand for raw material from Paraguay was already present in the Chinese market.
“China has grown dramatically as a market for hides from Paraguay,” Mr Legal said. “This is giving a degree of stability for our industry, which is welcome because sales to Italy, the most important market for us in the past, have dried up.”
He pointed out that industry contacts in Italy had helped Paraguay’s hide and tanning sector establish business ties with China, although trade was now direct, even though there is “no formal relationship” between the Paraguayan government and its counterpart in Beijing.
The companies shipping hides to China include Itacuer, Tecnocuer, San Francisco, Areguá, Vernon, Cecoprod, Frigorífico Concepción, Bertin, Pasec and 3 MS SA.
