Asia helps French luxury goods

The value of France’s exports of luxury goods fell by 13% in 2009, the secretary of state for external commerce, Anne-Marie Idrac, has announced.
She said: “The economic crisis of 2009 also affected the luxury sectory and our earnings fell by EUR 2.3 billion to EUR 13.8 billion. But this level of decrease is less than we have seen in our overall exports.” And she singled out leathergoods as a sector that had “suffered less than the average”.
Ms Idrac went on to explain that, while 60% of France’s overall exports go to other EU countries, only 49% of luxury goods exports are destined for its EU partners. Where luxury goods are concerned, the Asian market, which has continued to grow in spite of the global economic downturn, is twice as important as it is for overall French exports.
