Manufacturers of leather garments in China increased their output in 2009, but mostly to supply the domestic market.

Garment manufacturers made 56.1 million pieces of apparel from leather in 2009, which represents a growth of 6.6% year on year compared to 2008. In terms of value, the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) said total production last year was worth almost $6 billion, up 13.2% compared with previous year, but external observers have said this seems high.

China’s exports of leather garments have fallen for six consecutive years. In 2009, the volume of exports fell by 16% to 18.7 million pieces. The value of these exports was $780 million, the CLIA said, which represents a fall of 21.3% compared to 2008.
