India’s minister for commerce and industry, Jyotiraditya Scindia, has confirmed the details of an aid package that the government has put together for the country’s leather industry.
In a formal statement to the Lok Sabha, the country’s parliament, Mr Scindia said a leather development programme, which is part of the government’s current five-year plan (2007–2012), is divided into three “sub-schemes”.
In the first of these, he said the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) in Fursatganj, Uttar Pradesh, would receive over $1.5 million in grants from the central government.
Another part of the plan is to upgrade the existing FDDI facility at Noida, while establishing new institutes in Chennai, Kolkata and Rohtak in Haryana state. In total, the government will provide around $65 million for these developments.
Separately, the third “sub-scheme” involves establishing a new leather sector training centre in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. For this, the government will provide an additional $5.4 million.
