Bangladesh leather exports down

The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) of Bangladesh has announced that the country’s total leather sector exports fell by 3.6% to $203.1 million between July and December 2009, from $210.8 million in the same period the year before.

Footwear exports were worth $96.8 million of this total, down from $98.7 million in July-Decmeber 2008, while the latest figure for finished leather shows a decline of 6.8% to $97.62 million from $104.80 million.

On a positive note, exports of leathergoods rose by 19.7% to $8.69 million from $7.26 million the year before.

Bangladesh has fixed an export target of $476.8 million for the leather sector for the current financial year (1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010), out of total export target of $17.6 billion for all sectors.
