Three workers have died in a tannery in Bangladesh and nine others have been injured by inhaling toxic fumes. The incident took place on March 5 at the Apex Tannery in the Hazaribagh area of the capital city, Dhaka.
The company's executive director for production and marketing, MA Wajed told local media that the accident was caused by a mistake that another group of workers had made. He explained that the workers on the night shift the night before mixed chemicals in the wrong drum. “The morning shift workers were instantly affected when they opened it,” he said.
The company said carbon monoxide had built up in the drum overnight. When the morning shift workers activated the drum, they realised something was wrong and opened it to check. Toxic fumes overcame the three workers immediately. The other workers affected were colleagues who rushed to help them.
Mr Wajed said the company would give the families of the deceased workers as much compensation as it could.
