Brazil to have almost half the global meat market by 2020
05/03/2010
Brazil's ministry for agriculture has announced that it predicts the South American country will have a 44.5% share of the global meat market by 2020.
Even in 2010, the ministry's research suggests that Brazilian pork, chicken and beef will account for 37.4% of all the meat in the world.
If the prediction proves accurate, the role Brazil plays in supplying the global leather industry with raw and wet blue hides will be even more significant than it its at the moment.
The ministry's co-ordinator for strategic planning, José Garcia Gasques, said on announcing the information: "Domestic consumption [of meat] will certainly increase as earnings increase in Brazil, but there will also be huge demand in the global market."
