Leather production up in December

The authorities in Pakistan have released new data for the leather sector in December showing an upward trend in production. The new figures show a growth of 14% in production of finished leather and of 133.3% in sole leather on a month-on-month basis.
During the month of December 2009, the country produced 1.9 million square-metres of finished leather and 21 tonnes of sole leather, compared to 1.7 million square-metres and 9 tonnes in December 2008 respectively.
Pakistan's production of finished leather in the first six months of the 2009-10 financial year (July-December) stood at 11.7 million square-metres from 10.3 million square-metres in July-December 2008-09, showing a growth of 13.3%.
Similarly, the production of footwear also showed a positive trend on a cumulative basis, to 14.7 million pairs between July-December 2009 from 14 million pairs the year before, showing growth of 4.9%.
