At the end of the Milan Fashion Week (February 24–March 3) the creative director of fashion brand Gucci, Frida Giannini, pointed out that the world of leathergoods is wider than ever.

In conversation with Paris daily Le Monde, Ms Giannini said: “When I started out at Fendi, there were perhaps half a dozen big fashion houses that were important players in the leathergoods market. Today, everyone has their own accessories collection.”

Frida Giannini was born in Rome in 1972 and studied fashion design at Rome’s Fashion Academy. She began working at Fendi in 1997, designing ready-to-wear for three seasons before being promoted to become the brand’s designer of leathergoods.

She moved to Gucci in 2002 to become design director of handbags there, winning promotion in 2004 when Tom Ford left Gucci to become creative designer for all accessories. In 2005 she became creative director of women’s ready-to-wear at Gucci, as well as continuing her role in accessories. In 2006 she took over menswear too and became creative director of the whole label.
