Brazilian packer accused of doctoring certificates for EU meat
01/03/2010
Reports in Brazil suggest a packer in the state of Mato Grosso has falsified documentation for meat exports to the European Union.
The industry in the South American country is fearful of repercussions; exports of Brazilian beef to Europe fell by an estimated 25% in 2009 because of strict controls over foot and mouth disease.
One hope among commentators in Brazil is that the authorities in Europe may not react too forcefully to the news because it was the Brazilian ministry of agriculture itself that picked up on the discrepancy in the paperwork in the Mato Grosso case.
As a result of the incident, 12 containers of Brazilian beef are reported to have been held at European ports.
