Brazil increases leather exports
Brazilian leather exports totalled US$104.4 million in January, an increase of 42% compared with the same month last year, according to the Brazilian Tannery Association (CICB). Brazil’s leather exports totalled US$1.2 billion in 2009 compared with US$1.9 billion in 2008, a decline of 38%.
"At the beginning of the year, hide exports increased in quantity and value by 21% and 42%, respectively, compared with the same month in 2009 at the height of the economic crisis," says CICB president, Wolfgang Goerlich.
The leather export projection for 2010 is US$1.4 billion, representing an annual increase of 27%. However, the CICB points out that this is still below its 2007 export figure of US$2.2 billion.
