Jobs in Indian leather sector suffer
While the employment situation in India is certainly improving, the leather industry is not enjoying the benefits.
According to the Economic Survey for 2009-10 presented by finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee, employment figures increased by 500,000 during the second quarter compared with a 131,000 cut during the April to June period in 2009.
However, the survey, which covered eight business sectors including leather, textiles and automobiles, showed some worrying signs for leather workers. "All seven sectors, except leather, have registered an increase in employment during the quarter July-September," Mr Mukherjee said.
The survey collected information from 2,873 units across 11 states.
