Monthly increase for Pakistan leather exports
Pakistan's leather exports rose 10.6% in January to $70.5 million from $63.7 million in December.
The breakdown showed that finished leather exports in January rose 16.5% to $26.4 million, while leathergoods exports grew 0.1% to $35 million and footwear exports increased by 48.7% to $9.1 million (compared with $22.7 million, $34.9 million and $6.1 million, respectively in December.
However, according to the Federal Bureau of Statistics, leather exports were down by 10.9% compared with January 2008 ($79.1 million). Leather exports also fell 21.9% during for the period July 2009 to January 2010. Exports for the seven-month period totalled $491.1 million compared with $629.2 million during the prior-year period.
The breakdown showed that during this seven-month period, the country exported 10.6 million square-metres of finished leather worth $160.8 million compared with 12.2 million square-metres worth $188.7 million during the prior-year period. This represents a decline of 13.1% in quantity and 14.8% in value.
Pakistan exported leathergoods worth $272.6 million including leather garments ($220.1 million), leather gloves ($47.6 million) and other leathergoods ($4.9 million). This compares with $368.2 million in the six-month period last year, a drop of 26%.
The country also exported 6.3 million pairs of footwear worth $57.8 million, including leather footwear worth $46.5 million, canvas footwear worth $0.3 million and other footwear worth $11 million. This compared with 8 million pairs worth $72.2 million in the prior-year period, a 20% decline.
