Decline in Bangladeshi leather exports
According to Bangladesh's Export Promotion Bureau, the country’s total leather exports fell 6.7% to $171.1 million between July and November 2009 compared with $183.3 million during the same period last year.
The breakdown showed that Bangladesh exported leather footwear worth $80.1 million during the period compared with $84.8 million during the prior-year period, a decline of 5.5%. Finished leather exports fell 8.8% to $83.9 million from $92 million.
On the plus side, leather bag and purse exports rose 9% to $7.1 million compared with $6.5 million during the five-month period in 2008.
Bangladesh has fixed an export target of $476.8 million for the leather sector this year, of a total export target of $17.6 billion.
