New leather industrial estate in Pakistan
Development company Punjab Industrial Estate (PIE) is setting up a new leather industrial estate with the help of the Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA).
The new estate will cover 150 acres of land and will be built near Raiwand, Lahore.
PIE chairman, Mr S Tanveer, said he and several PTA representatives had visited the site and that he would unveil further details in the near future. Mr Tanveer hopes the new zone will produce leather exports worth $5 billion within five years compared with the $943 million that are currently being produced.
According to the PTA, leather garment exports account for around 7% of the company’s total exports. The leather sector employs around 200,000 people and contributes around 5% to gross domestic product.
