Indian leather exports fall 16.6%

Indian leather exports fell 16.6% between April and December 2009. Exports for the period totalled $2.4 billion compared with $2.8 billion during the nine-month period in 2008. In rupee terms, leather exports fell 8% to Rs113.2 billion from Rs123.1 billion.

The breakdown showed that finished leather exports fell by 24.8% to $438.5 million from $583.29 million, while leather footwear exports dropped 12.3% to $812.8 million from $926.8 million compared with prior-year figures. Footwear component exports were down 23.3% to $157.5 million from $205.5 million, while leather garment exports dropped 5% to $313.6 million from $330.2 million. Leathergoods exports fell 18.7% to $555.6 million from $683.1 million, while saddlery and harness exports declined by 21.2% to $58.2 million from $73.8 million.
