Footwear specialist at the French Fashion Institute (IFM), Nathalie Elharrar, has spoken of the success of a project to send young designers from the school to companies specialising in the leather fashion ector to gain valuable experience.

In a presentation at the most recent edition of Le Cuir A Paris, Ms Elharrar, who has designed shoes for high end brands including Balmain, Karl Lagerfeld, Thierry Mugler and Carel, said the IFM students had benefited from seeing at first hand the many steps involved in creating luxury shoes and how to design around them.

She told leatherbiz: "So many designers have never worked with a cutter or a stitching team before and have very little idea of what it's like for those people. We wanted our students to have contact with those professionals and to feel that it's important for them to be part of a team."
