Argentina produces record amount of meat

10/02/2010

Argentinean meat production grew 10.4% in 2009 compared with 2008 figures, reaching a record level of 3.54 million tonnes, according to the country’s Chamber for Industry and Commerce of Beef and Beef Derivatives (CICCRA).

Nevertheless, the department does not believe 2010 figures will be so high, as the country’s flock continues to decline and as a result of severe drought in the past year.

"Since 2010, total withdrawals have started to fall and increasing meat prices will lead to a contraction of domestic consumption and exports," CICCRA said.
Of the total number of animals slaughtered in 2009, 49.7% were females, the highest number in 20 years and above the 49.1% recorded during the previous year.
