According to reports, 317 companies in Nanhai city, China, including a number of tanneries, have signed an agreement with the local environmental authority. Under the agreement, the authority can suspend production at each site for three months if environmental standards are not met. Following this, if rules continued to be flouted, the authority has the power to close the facility down.

Ten companies in the leather, pottery and porcelain, glassmaking, dyeing and printing sectors have signed additional agreements relating to energy saving and emissions reduction.
