MLA responds to criticism over beef price slump
Meat and Livestock Australia has responded to criticism from the Australian Beef Association over the recent slump in beef prices.
Managing director David Palmer told the Weekly Times it would continue its core activities despite the downturn, which he largely attributed to the strong currency, a series of poor seasons and a lack of discretion in terms of spending in Japan and the US.
"I would be the first to admit that we're going through a disappointing slump in cattle prices," Mr Palmer said. "There is a lot of disquiet at the moment from some quarters and this disquiet finds fertile ground when prices and viability, particularly in beef, are under pressure."
He added: "I guess we can discuss these phenomena for ages, but we must stick to our core responsibilities." This means continuing to promote the industry at home and overseas as well as running a research programme to increase farm productivity.
