Vaccinations start in Mato Grosso
A new vaccination scheme started on February 1 in the Brazilian municipalities of Mato Grosso that border Bolivia. According to reports, 81,533 cows and buffaloes aged up to 12 months will receive the foot and mouth vaccine. Immunisation will take place throughout February and will involve 521 properties in Cáceres, Porto Esperidião and Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade. The official veterinary service will supervise the work and vaccines will be implemented by the Institute of Agricultural Protection (Indea). Proof of vaccination will also be issued by Indea.
"Matto Grosso is recognised internationally as an area free of foot and mouth, as is Bolivia, which borders our cities. Vaccination guarantees the protection of animals and complements efforts to control transportation across fixed and mobile barriers," said Enio José Martins, head of Indea.
Oxen and buffaloes kept at the same properties that are older than 12 months will be vaccinated during the next stages of the campaign, which are set to take place in May and November.
